Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the back of the leg, sometimes with numbness or tingling. It is commonly caused by a disc bulge ('slip disc') pressing on a nerve root in the lower spine.
The good news is that most disc-related sciatica improves with conservative care. Our physiotherapy approach calms the irritated nerve, restores safe movement and builds the core and hip strength your spine needs.

Frequently asked questions
Do all slip discs need surgery?
No. The majority of disc bulges improve with physiotherapy and time. Surgery is usually considered only with severe or progressive weakness, loss of bladder control, or pain that doesn't respond to conservative care.
Can I do forward bending exercises with sciatica?
It depends on your assessment. Some patients improve with certain directions of movement and worsen with others, which is why a personalised plan matters.
Should I bring my MRI report?
Yes, please bring any MRI, X-ray or doctor's notes to your first visit.
What is the best sleeping position for sciatica?
Most people are more comfortable lying on their back with a pillow under the knees, or on their side with a pillow between the knees. Avoid sleeping on your stomach on a very soft mattress. Your physiotherapist will suggest what suits your back. See also our sciatica exercises at home.
Can an L4-L5 or L5-S1 disc bulge heal with physiotherapy?
Yes, most L4-L5 and L5-S1 disc bulges settle over several weeks with directional exercises, nerve calming and core support. Read our full guide on L4-L5 and L5-S1 slip disc recovery without surgery.
