Knee Osteoarthritis: How Physiotherapy Helps You Walk Without Pain
Knee arthritis doesn't have to stop you from walking. Learn why strength is the best medicine for your knees.

Knee osteoarthritis is very common after 40, especially in women. It causes pain on stairs, stiffness after sitting, and difficulty sitting on the floor. The cartilage changes can't be reversed, but pain and everyday function can improve a lot with physiotherapy.
Strength is medicine for your knees. Strong thigh and hip muscles take load off the joint. Staying active is better for arthritic knees than resting them completely.
Why strengthening matters
The quadriceps (front thigh muscles) and hip muscles absorb shock and control the knee. When they are weak, more load falls on the joint. Strengthening them is one of the most effective treatments for knee osteoarthritis.
3 simple exercises to start (if pain allows)
- Static quads: sitting with your leg straight, press the back of your knee down into a rolled towel. Hold 5 seconds. 10 times.
- Straight leg raise: lying on your back with the other knee bent, tighten your thigh and lift the straight leg about a foot. 10 times each leg.
- Sit to stand: stand up slowly from a chair without using your hands, then sit back down with control. 8–10 times.

A simple weekly plan
| Week | How often | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Once a day | Static quads and straight leg raises |
| 3–4 | Once or twice a day | Add sit to stand from a higher chair |
| 5+ | Daily | A lower chair, more repetitions, longer walks |
Everyday tips
- Keep walking at a comfortable pace and avoid sitting for long periods.
- Use a western toilet, and avoid deep squatting or sitting cross-legged on the floor if it hurts.
- Wear cushioned, supportive footwear.
- Even modest weight loss reduces the load on your knees.
- On stairs, use the handrail: up with the good leg, down with the painful leg.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping all activity because of pain: the muscles weaken and the knee gets stiffer.
- Deep squats or long stair climbs on a painful day.
- Relying only on pain balms and tablets without strengthening.
